Amanda Cook
I trained at the British School of Osteopathy (BSO) as a mature student and graduated with a Bachelor of Osteopathy degree. Since then I have undertaken several post-graduate courses in Cranial Osteopathy with the Sutherland Cranial Society.and am currently finishing off a MSc in Paediatric Osteopathy with the world renowned Foundation of Paediatric Osteopathy (FPO) in London. In 2007 I moved from London to South Wales and now run busy practices in Chepstow, and Newport.
Prior to my training I was a Treasurer working in the city and outer suburbs of London. Through working long and stressful hours I discovered osteopathy following a year long suffering of low back pain and migraines. I was persuaded to see an osteopath and was amazed when I suddenly became pain free and realised how long I had put up with this discomfort.
This is one of the reasons why I decided to become an osteopath. My aim is to make more people aware of their bodies and know that they can do something about the pain and discomfort they may find themselves in, such as from the stresses and strains of working life, from sports injuries, accidents, and emotional traumas. One of the principles of osteopathy is to treat YOU as an individual and that includes taking into account your lifestyle, your family, your emotions, encompassing the whole of you. I want YOU to become aware that you do not have to 'put up' with having Irritable bowel syndrome, you do not have to 'put up' with having a lower back ache. YOU can do something about it. As well as treating for the primary symptom I look at why those symptoms started in the first place and I will give you advice on exercises, diet, etc to help YOU change what is causing these symptoms to occur.
I believe that if I can treat babies and toddlers early on in their growing life then any retained stresses and strains can be removed before they can develop into irritations / dysfunctions / pain later on as an older child / teenager / adult. For instance I've just successfully treated a 7 year old child who had Irritable Bowel Syndrome for 4 years. This child had a difficult birth. Retained mouldings through the cranial bones and strains through the digestive system had possibly caused problems which the medical profession were unable to help with. This child only needed 2 treatments and now is able to enjoy school and play with friends without having this pain and irritation to deal with.
I continue studying within this profession not just because my registration with the General Osteopathic Council requires me to but also because I enjoy discovering new ways of being able to help YOU.
