Stretching for health

body stretchDid you know that there are lots of types of stretches?  No, yes, maybe?  I had only ever done stretches either at the gym and those recommended by my yoga teacher.  So I was somewhat surprised to discover that there are at least 7 types (According to Bath University).

As we age,  muscles tighten and range of motion in the joints will alter. Think about all ofthe pressure you have put on your body over your lifetime, weight training, running, cycling, housework, long walks, it’s a lot isn’t it.  It can be annoying when tasks that used to be simple, such as reaching for a can off of the top shelf, or getting up off your comfy sofa now become extremely difficult. A regular stretching program can help lengthen your muscles and make daily living activities easier.

It’s not too late and everyone can learn to stretch, regardless of age or flexibility. Make today the day that you make stretching part of your daily routine, whether you exercise or not. There are simple stretches you can do while watching TV, sitting at the computer, or getting ready for bed or before you get out of bed (one of my favourite).

Sun Salutation

One of my favourites is the all over body stretch just before I get out of bed, I just throw my arms and legs out and push.  Another is the sun salutation, which is a bit more energetic but gets to every part of your body, even your mind.  It is a series of 12 postures, they are simple and you do a number of salutations each morning to greet the day.  Follow this link to see just how easy it is, the site has a range of pictures and advice for you to follow.
